The Enemy is not a Stranger – Emetenjor Friday Maduabuchi writes [Must Read]

Bolu had just gotten admission into the University of Ibadan, after six attempt. He was super excited and nothing could stop his joy, not even the thoughts of how he was going to keep up in school, knowing he’s struggling with finance, and currently squatting with Ebuka, his long time friend.

As somebody who has been struggling to survive since his parents died 13yrs ago, Bolu vowed to train himself through school and make the best out of his life. He started hawking sachet water and soft drinks in traffic to support his factory work, so as gather enough cash to pay for acceptance fee.

It’s two days to the deadline of payment and the money is yet to be complete. Bolu pleaded with his sachet water supplier, Mama Emeka, to lend him some money and swore to pay back soon. Mama Emeka hesitated but gave Bolu the money after considering the stakes and concluding that hardworking Bolu can actually pay.

By 9pm the night before deadline, Bolu had successfully gathered 40k for acceptance fee. He called Ebuka to tell him the goodnews, Ebuka was happy for him and told him he won’t be coming home that night. Bolu took his bathe and throughout that night, he was dancing to Teni’s Uyo Meyo. Ibi ti daddy mi o de, madebe matu koja o.

1am. Aggressive hands started knocking the door. Tired Bolu sluggishly stood up and asked who was knocking. Nobody answered. Before he could put himself together, the door came down with a heavy kick and three armed guys on mask entered the room.

They demanded for the money. But Bolu, knowing what the money meant to him and how he struggled before gathering it, refused to give them. They shot his leg. The leader of the gang went straight to Bolu’s bag, collected the money and passed it to one of the guys.

While they were about leaving in haste, Bolu gathered all the strength he could, dragged down the leader of the gang and bite off some chunk of meat from his neck.

Early in the morning, neighbors entered the room and saw Bolu and Ebuka in a pool of blood.
